Caption: A Look Inside the Leclanché and St. Kitts and Nevis Planned Solar Generation and Energy Storage Project

The largest solar generation plus energy storage project ever to be built in the Caribbean has been announced and is in the final stages of approval by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The 35.6 MW solar energy plant and 44.2 MWh battery storage facility will provide between 25-30% of the nation’s current power generation needs while displacing the same amount of diesel-generated capacity. The population of St. Kitts and Nevis is estimated to be 56,000 while tourism grows substantially with nearly 150,000 airport visitors in 2018 – a seven percent increase compared to 2017 – and a near record of more than 1.1 million cruise passengers in 2017.

The Leclanché project will consist of:

1. Six 40-foot containers with High-Power Battery Racks
2. Eight 45-foot containers with High-Energy Battery Racks
3. Solar PV + Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) substation and project office
4. Visitor parking
5. Employee parking
6. Storage container for spare solar parts
7. Storage container for spare BESS parts
8. Seven BESS Inverters
9. Four BESS Transformers

The fully integrated solar photovoltaic and lithium‐ion BESS will provide clean and reliable energy for residents and for tourists visiting St. Kitts and Nevis.
